A pirate ship with a parrot on his shoulder.
Pirates and pirates were active on the world's oceans in the 16th and 17th century, raiding and plundering ships. They were active in many parts of the world, particularly in the Caribbean Sea and the Indian Ocean. Most pirates and buccaneers were sailors who turned to piracy to make a living, but there were also professional pirates who specialized in looting ships. Piracy was a major problem for seafaring in the 17th century and led to wars between the powers of Europe, which fought over control of trade routes. Today, however, pirates and pirates are largely extinct, as shipping is safer and better protected.
