The goldfinch is perhaps the most famous bird in the world. This little bird looks at you almost immediately, while its leg is attached to a chain. Our own master painters surrounded the bird with pastel flowers and depicted it on a mug. The gold-colored earpiece is a reference to the Golden Age, a period when Dutch painters made their most beautiful paintings that are still admired worldwide today. Fabritius was seen as the founder of the so-called Delft School, of which Johannes Vermeer was also a well-known representative.
